Techniques in Laboratory Animals and Exotics

A general overview of the field of laboratory animals and exotic species will be covered. Emphasis will be on husbandry, humane care, handling, nutrition, restraint, reproduction, recognition of common diseases including zoonoses, and ethical use. Prerequisites: VET 100, VET 101,BIO 123, and BIO LB3 each with a grade of ‘C’ or higher. Corequisites: BIO 124, BIO LB4, and VET LB3.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Identify various breeds of laboratory animals (rabbits, rats, mice, and birds) commonly used in laboratory research settings.
2. Identify the gender of commonly used laboratory animal species.
3. Explain the reproductive cycle of various laboratory animal species (rabbits, rats, and mice).
4. Explain anesthetic and recovery procedures for laboratory animals (rabbits, rats, and mice).
5. Identify etiology of and describe clinical signs, treatment and mode of transmission of common diseases of animal species used in laboratory medicine.
6. Identify common zoonotic diseases of a variety of laboratory animal species, which could include rabbits, rats, mice, ferrets, birds, nonhuman primates, guinea pigs, hamsters, or gerbils.
7. Discuss issues involved in research that may include the procurement, health and wellbeing, housing, design of the research, or euthanasia of laboratory animals.
8. Describe techniques to ensure safety of the laboratory research team.
9. Describe the application of regulations that govern the use and care of lab animals to the lab animals housed at the GCC facility.
